I noticed Mel’s Diner when I was filling up with gas, tucked away back off the Parkway. It has been a long time since I had seen let alone eaten in a Great American authentic Diner so this was a must for yesterday evening.
It was all there, from the shiny chrome building and neon sign to the photo’s of old classic American cars in the windows, now I am really getting excited!!
I walk in and to my left there is a huge gum ball machine. To my right is an old style working juke box.
In front of me I am greeted by the friendliest of hosts, who showed me to my table. Across the black and white checkered floor, chrome ceilings with neon strips, photo’s of old cars and singers.
I did not think they could get any more authentic until I seen it…….. There it was on the wall in front of me above the window a sign reading “Kiss My Grits”!!!! AWESOME!!
My waitress was timely and very friendly, she took my drink order and brought it back straight away. I ordered the “Chubby Checker Cheeseburger” and fries. When she took my order I decided this would be a great opportunity to book my ticket for a show later that evening. I was on the phone for less than 2 minutes and my food arrived, I could not believe how quickly I received my food as the diner was busy. It tasted delicious and the portion size was big. Very satisfying.
Apparently I heard you have to try the “Banana Split” here. Please keep in mind I devoured my burger.
3 scoops are harmless, right? How difficult could it be to finish one?
I quickly realized this should be shared with 3 people. Yes, I only got the one with 3 scoops. A family of 5 could easily eat the 6 scoop one. Here is my pathetic attempt to finish it.
Great Food, fantastic service and good prices matched by the decor in this truly Authentic American experience.
